Check Valves, Knife (Guillotine or Gate) Valves, and Ball Valves
for Koi Ponds, Goldfish Ponds and Water Gardens
Know What They Do, Choose the Right One for Your Pond, Learn How to Install Them and Learn How to Get the Most Out of Them

  Check Valves
Check Valves (also known as Backflow Preventors) are used in the line between pieces of equipment to prevent water from flowing backwards.  Check Valves prevent water from flowing back into the pond from an external pump so the pump won't lose it's prime.  This is only needed when the pump is on an elevation higher than the water level of the pond.  They are also used between the pump and the filter when the filter is on an elevation higher than the pump so that the water will not flow back and cause the impeller of the pump to turn the wrong way which can easily damage the pump.  Another use for a check valve is on a vacuum bottom drain or drain strainer that is connected to a flex hose that goes up and over the edge of the pond.

TIP:  DO NOT USE THE SPRING CHECK VALVE YOU CAN GET AT THE LOCAL HARDWARE STORE ON PONDS.  The flow is highly restricted.

We like the flapper type that is shown in this picture.  For ordering and pricing of check valves click HERE.

Installation Tips:  These check valves are made of PVC and are glued with all purpose PVC glue onto PVC pipe.  Care must be taken that the check valve is positioned correctly.  Installation instructions are shipped with this product.

    Ball Valves
Ball Valves are used to control flow.  They are inserted in by-passes or in lines to equipment to control the flow of water through each component.  Ball Valves can also be used to seal off drains until draining is needed.  They are probably the best item to temporarily seal drain lines because they are harder to move than gate valves.  Because they are harder to use than a gate valve arthritis sufferers and others (like me) who have a hard time with their hands should use a gate valve instead of a ball valve.

    Gate Valves
Gate Valves (also known as Knife or Guillotine Valves) are used to control flow to equipment - just like the ball valve - but they tend to be easier to work than a ball valve.  The Gate Valve is great to use on the lines from the bottom drain and skimmer so that they can be adjusted more easily than a ball valve.

We are still working on this portion of our education center.  In the meantime you can find valves available at PondDoc.com HERE.
