Introducing the Pond Doc's Choice You don't have to sacrifice quality and high-efficiency to pay less for an external pump. Now you have an efficient, 2-speed external pump just perfect for ponds up to 2500 gallons that won't drain your pond construction budget. |
Most of the backyard ornamental koi ponds and water gardens in the U.S. are between 600 and 2500 gallons. The SuperFlo
™ is perfect for ponds that fall within this range. It runs off regular 115v, comes equipped with a 6-ft. cord and 3-way switch so no special wiring is needed. It's a 2-speed and runs very quietly and efficiently on LOW while providing a HIGH speed option for use when backwashing bead filters or whenever extra "umph" is needed - like when company is over and you want white waters or when treating the pond and increased circulation of oxygenated water is desired. The Pond Doc chose this pump for several reasons. It has an oversized leaf basket (also called priming pot) that will allow the pump to run for longer periods between emptying. This is important for ponds because unlike swimming pools ponds have a thousand times more algae, debris and leaves to strain out. The SuperFlo is self-priming which means it can be installed up to 3 ft. higher than water level. Not all external pumps are capable of pulling water up to fill the priming pot but this one is. It, of course, can also be gravity-fed, positioned so that it is on an elevation lower than the water level of the pond. We have tested this pump and have had no problems with it lasting and it does have a 1-year manufacturer's limited warranty just in case.
The SuperFlo is a perfect match for bead filters (such as the ProBead) and other pressurized filters (such as the SuperPro) that depend on high-volume backwashing because it has 2 speeds. On low we get up to 2300 gallons per hour while running cool, quiet and energy efficient. This will provide the right amount of flow to power a small waterfall of up to 5 ft. high and to run through the filters while on the filtering mode. With just a flick of the switch the pump will "kick it up a notch" and provide up to 5500 gph of flow strong enough to thoroughly backwash them.
We would strongly recommend the SuperFlo external pump for ponds up to 2500 gallons that use bead filters or other pressurized systems. If the filter has a blower attached the 2-speed option is not necessary so another pump might be better suited. We would not recommend it for ponds that have waterfalls higher than 5 ft. and wider than 2 ft. or with streambeds more than 10 ft. long. For these situations or for ponds more than 2500 gallons we invite you to look at the Performance Pro line.
