Water Clearing Agents for Crystal Clear Pond Water

The Pond Doc is known for his beautiful crystal clear pond water and that's probably one of the biggest reasons he is in business today.  Everyone asked him how he got his water so clear and he's spent the better part of a decade helping folks clear up their ponds.  There are many factors involved with getting (and keeping) clear pond water.  It's not a secret - just the right equipment and methods of maintenance.

There are several reasons why a pond may not be clear.  It could be experiencing a natural algae bloom (dense green water), a bacterial bloom, long strings or clumps of algae, suspended particles in the water, water tanning, foam, or clouds of mud from rain runoff.  There is a way to get rid of all without compromising the health of the pond's inhabitants.

One of the things we do is actually use and test the products we sell.  We won't sell anything that doesn't have a purpose (in other words a waste of money) or is bad for the pond environment.  We do NOT believe manufacturer's claims because what the label says is so often far removed from the truth - and there's no one to regulate it.  Many products claim to "clear up pond water" but the truth of the matter is that they only "help" the water to clear up and, more often than not, they don't do a good job of it.  Take for example AlgaeFix.  The label says it will clear up green water.  If you use AlgaeFix to get rid of green water you are going to be sorely disappointed.  AlgaeFix, however, is one of our favorite and best-selling products because it DOES kill string and blanket algae.

Check out our Product Profiles for the skinny on many of the water clearing agents out there on the market.  Here are also a few good articles that should help you out with your quest to clear up your koi pond or water garden:

Below you'll find common pond clarity problems and the products to use to get rid of them...

String or Blanket Algae

Long strands of algae that clings to the side of the pond, hangs on the plants, hangs off the waterfall, gathers on the rocks or clumps into bundles that float on the water.  AlgaeFix kills what's there.  Barley bales or extract helps prevent it from coming back.

Many chemical products claim to clear up green water.  The chemicals listed below only HELP, they do NOT magically clear it up.  It takes time and patience for the pond to naturally clear up and there are not guarantees that it won't go green again.  The sure-fire way of keeping the water clear of algae bloom is to install an Ultraviolet Water Clarifier (UV).

Suspended Particles   If the water is brown or dark you may have a case of suspended particles.  If you fill a jar with pond water and hold it up you will see that millions of tiny particles are floating around in the water.  This will affect you more after a hard rain (dirt introduced by runoff), after you treat with AlgaeFix (the particles are pieces of dead string algae), or after introducing plants potted with soil.  Coagulators bind the particles together.  They fall to the bottom and either settle or are sucked up by the pump and filtered out by the filter.

Foam or Suds   You may wake up one morning to find your pond covered in foam.  This (hopefully) is not the work of a prankster putting soap suds in your pond but more likely harmless proteins left behind by spawning fish.  If the fish aren't dying then it's the latter.  Our de-foaming agent works instantly to safely clear up the bubbles.

White, Hazy Water

If your pond water has a milky white hazy appearance likely as not you are experiencing a bacterial bloom.  Bacterial blooms usually occur in spring when the waters begin heating up and bacteria begins colonizing.  It will go away in time on its own.  You can clear it up "almost" instantly with a coagulator.  You can also help the bacteria finish blooming by adding helpers.

USE CAUTION when using chemicals!

We, at The Pond Doc's Water Garden Center, believe in achieving a balanced eco-system over the use of chemicals to keep your water clear and safe.  We do not carry the "full line" of chemicals that you can find in garden stores and other places, although these items are reputed as profit items.  Most that we've tested either do not live up to what they claim to do or are unsafe for your fish's environment.  We do carry those with which we've had success but we'll inform you of any precautions you must take while using them that the manufacturers sometimes ignore.  For more information on the use of chemicals in your pond read our article, Chemical Alert.
