Plumbing Parts Knowing a little plumbing never hurt a pond builder. After all - moving water is a very big part of the pond. Whenever possible we like to use regular PVC plumbing parts that you can pick up at your nearest hardware store because they aren't as expensive as running flexible hose and fittings designed especially for pond building. PVC tends to lasts longer too. Sometimes it makes more sense to use the flexible tubing, especially on smaller ponds and with submersible pumps. There is also a PVC flex that is now available that combines the durability of PVC with the bend-ability of the flex hose. It won't bend as much as the black flex hose but it makes sense to use it when you don't want the restriction of elbows in the plumbing. Some valves and fittings that you can get cheaply are not good to use for ponds. For example, the spring-type check valve (that prevents water from flowing backwards) you find at Home Depot or Lowes will greatly decrease the amount of flow from your pump because it restricts the line. Therefore, we like the flapper-type check valves. They aren't as easy to find but don't worry - we have them here. To get more information on plumbing a pond, visit The Pond Doc's Pond Construction Education Center. Here are a few articles that should be helpful to you when you are deciding upon the sizes and types of plumbing parts you'll need:

Hose & Piping
When purchasing hose - bigger IS
better. Larger hose is less restrictive and improves water flow. The size of
the outlet port of your pump should not dictate the size hose you choose. For
example, Cal submersible pumps come with 1 1/4" outlet ports. It's common to
adapt the port to 1 1/2" (using a readily available adaptor listed below) in
order to achieve better flow.

Fish-Safe Skimmers
Side skimmers, such as those used on
swimming pools, create a hazard for an unsuspecting fish. The safest skimmer to
place on your system is the fish-safe skimmer.
| Fish
Safe Skimmer This skimmer can be installed directly into the side of the pond or without making a hole in the liner. It attaches to a PVC arm that protrudes from the wall of the pond via a bulk head fitting. Another method would be to use hard PVC and have it attach over the side of the pond. The basket inside the skimmer floats up with the water level which gives a little room for lower water levels before it begins to suck in air. |
AES750B | $ 119.95 |
Eduction
Jets
Create flow
by guiding returning water around corners.

Eduction
Jet Threaded male 3/4" ends make it easy to install into bulk head configuration. |
IndJet034 | $ 59.95 |

Eduction
Jet Threaded male 1 1/2" ends make it easy to install into bulk head configuration. Larger Jet allows increased water flow preferred in larger koi ponds. |
IndJet112 | $ 119.95 |
Auto Fill Valves
We have temporarily taken the
Auto Fill Valves off the internet.
Bulk Head Fittings
Bulk Head Fittings make it possible to
plumb right through the liner or hard plastic tubs without water leaking where it
shouldn't. Use bulk head fittings for installing fish-safe skimmers and induction jets.
Valves
Valves regulate, restrict and direct
water flow.

Gate Valve Gate opens and closes to allow more or less water flow through. Connects to PVC. |

Check Valve Also known as a backflow preventer, it allows water to flow in only one direction. Connects to PVC. Illustrated installation instructions included with purchase. (Much better to use than standard spring-action valve found at most hardware stores because it does not restrict the flow like the spring-action valve does.) |
